CESET team international conference in Addis Ababa

23rd July, 2024

Last month Professor Vanesa Castán Broto and Dr Vicky Simpson travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to meet with their project team. The final international conference “Applying community energy systems to influence energy transitions in Africa” took place in the Skylight Hotel on 18th June 2024. The final conference brought together the CESET team, with researchers, activists, practitioners and community energy project managers from Ethiopia, UK, Malawi and Mozambique. The conference included key notes which you can watch on the CESET YouTube Playlist via the links below, followed by responses and open discussion.

Later in the week the CESET team visited the Lydetco Six Floor building which is fully energized by solar energy. This sparkling white building has no electric power lines extending to it. The building has been operational since the start of 2024 and solely relies on the cascading 108 solar panels on the top floor, with the design and installation of the solar system costing 2.5 million Br. The energy production of this building peaks at around 160Kwh day in the dry season, dwindling to 120Kwh with a cloud cover. The amount is close to the energy consumed by around 24 households.
