At the 2024 IEEE PES/IAS PowerAfrica Conference, I presented findings from our study titled “A Comprehensive exploration of renewable energy education landscape in Ethiopian public universities,” conducted by CESET in Ethiopia. This research aimed to analyze the state of energy education across Ethiopian higher education, particularly focusing on program offerings, curriculum content, geographical distribution, and the challenges and opportunities within the sector.

Workshop on facilitating inclusive and just energy transitions

This hybrid workshop took place on Wednesday 25th September 2024 at The Royal Society in London. Professor Vanesa Castán Broto gave a welcome lecture on "realising the benefits of community energy for a just energy transition", followed by a keynote by Professor Yacob Mulugetta on "community energy in the just transitions agenda". Resilient community energy systems webinar

The CESET project and Loughborough University are co-organising a webinar on Wednesday 6th November 2024 11am to 12.30pm. This webinar explores the strategies to realize resilient community energy systems which can withstand unforeseen natural hazards, climate change induced risks and socio-political disruptions. Building resilient community energy systems is critical to ensure clean and reliable energy access to vulnerable communities residing in remote and risk prone regions, especially in developing countries of Global South.

Mzuzu University publish new report on training female engineers

Our Malawian CESET colleagues Chris Hara and Chrispin Gogoda have recently published a new report "Female technician and Engineers Training" funded as part of the CESET project. This was the second cohort of trainees that Mzuzu University trained over 4 weeks earlier in the year delivered by the Test and Training Center for Renewable Energy Technologies.

CESET team international conference in Addis Ababa

Last month Professor Vanesa Castán Broto and Dr Vicky Simpson travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to meet with their project team. The final international conference “Applying community energy systems to influence energy transitions in Africa” took place in the Skylight Hotel on 18th June 2024. The final conference brought together the CESET team, with researchers, activists, practitioners and community energy project managers from Ethiopia, UK, Malawi and Mozambique.

Dr Chrispin Gogoda appointed a Malawi Battery Ambassador

Congratulations to Chrispin on his successful application to The Faraday Institution to be a Battery Ambassador for Malawi. The aim of the programme is to further promote battery technology and energy storage research and networking across sub–Saharan Africa, South Asia and the Indo-Pacific. This is in partnership with the Transforming Energy Access Learning Partnership (TEA-LP) as part of the Ayrton Challenge on Energy Storage (ACES).

Keynote presentations from the CESET conference available to watch

On the 26th of September, CESET organised an external facing conference “From Market to Social Value: Reimagining the role of community energy in Sustainability Transitions” in Sheffield. The conference brought together the CESET team, researchers, activists, practitioners, and community energy project managers from the UK, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, and South Africa. The conference included keynotes followed by responses and open discussion.

Amare Assefa presented at the ICAREED-24 conference in the USA

16th January, 2024

CESET member Amare Assefa from Addis Ababa University presented a research entitled “A Survey of Energy Technology Graduate Program and graduate’s Experience with perspective on community energy: Ethiopia Case” at the ICAREED-24 conference. ICAREED-24 took place 11 th - 12 th January 2024 in Washington DC, USA. It brought together researchers, educators, and practitioners from around the world to discuss the latest developments and challenges in the application of renewable energy and environmental development.

CESET team presented at the International Conference on Environmental Engineering & Renewable Energy

Solomon Bahta and Mulualem Gebreslassie authored a CESET conference paper, which was presented virtually by Solomon on 22 December 2023, at the International Conference on Environmental Engineering and Renewable Energy (ICENVERE - 23) in Finland, thanks to funding from the CESET project.

New report from Mzuzu University on renewable energy training for women

Last year Mzuzu University delivered a 10 day training course on renewable energy for women engineers and technicians, which was implemented by the Test and Training Center for Renewable Energy Technologies, (TCRET), with funding from the Community Energy Systems and Sustainable Energy Transitions Project.

Workshop on fostering intersectional energy education in Africa

20th December, 2023

On 28 November 2023 the CESET project team held an online discussion about promoting intersectional energy education in Africa. The meeting was organized to discuss and share experiences across Malawi, Mozambique and Ethiopia and to learn and design better training and education for energy engineers. The participants reached a consensus that there is a gender gap in the engineering education sector, particularly in Electrical and Mechanical engineering, which are important routes for entering the energy sector.
